Richard Young is one of the most beloved artists of Madison County, Virginia. For thirty years he has touched countless lives and encouraged their artistic expressions as Madison County High School's art teacher. Now retired, Young has more time for two of his favorite activities: running and of course, painting scenes from local places that inspire him.
Young's oil paintings are so realistic, you can almost smell the fresh country air after a refreshing rain, or hear the rustling of the leaves on a crisp autumn day. His focus is in the details. This focus, along with his incredible skill with each stroke allows for the viewer to step into the places he holds dear.
As Young stated, he is "testing possibilities, noticing defining details, painting realistic landscapes is who I am as an artist. I work from the realization that people connect with places and scenes that are real, that we can identify or at least identify with. I use easily recognizable features, details like tree shapes and fences, patterns of objects. I work in oils on canvas, with dramatic effects (sunrise, sunset, mists) to catch the viewer’s eye. Each day I paint because the natural drama around me impels me to capture and create. And, in so doing, I document the glorious world around me, attempting to freeze the fleeting everyday scene and make it heroic."
